Throughout this article, “OneNote” refers to the desktop version (previously called ”OneNote 2016”), and “OneNote for Windows 10” refers to the Microsoft Store app that’s available only on Windows 10. Now the company has decided to bring those apps together over the course of the next year.
There are multiple versions of OneNote because Microsoft attempted to serve two different audiences: those who used the entire Office suite and those looking for a note-taking app. Microsoft plans to combine OneNote and OneNote for Windows 10 into a single app with a redesigned user interface that should look right at home on Windows 11.
